The Joy of Entrepreneurship

Let’s address something crucial right away: Don’t ever let anyone rob you from joy. The entrepreneurial journey has enough challenges without carrying the weight of others’ doubts or negativity. Oprah Winfrey reminds us: “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.”  Your business dream is worth protecting with fierce boundaries. Scripture tells us in Nehemiah 8:10: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.”  This joy isn’t just emotional—it’s fuel for resilience when challenges come. And they will come.

Think Smart, Not Hard

One of the greatest myths of entrepreneurship is that success requires constant hustling and grinding. The truth? Think smart, not hard. As Arianna Huffington wisely noted: “We need to accept that we won’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes—understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success.”

Smart thinking means:

• Leveraging your unique strengths
• Building systems that work while you don’t
• Understanding your market deeply
• Forming strategic partnerships
• Knowing when to delegate

Proverbs 31:16 describes the virtuous woman who “considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands, she plants a vineyard.”  Notice she considers first—she’s strategic, thoughtful, and deliberate before acting.

Overcoming the Fear of Failure

Nothing beats a failure but a try. How many women’s brilliant business ideas never see daylight because of fear? Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx and self-made billionaire, shares: “My father used to ask my brother and me what we had failed at each week. If we didn’t have something to tell him, he would be disappointed. He wanted us to try everything and to try hard; it didn’t matter if we failed.” 

Remember Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Your first attempt may not succeed perfectly. Your first product might need refinement. Your first marketing campaign might fall flat. But with each attempt, you grow stronger, wiser, and closer to success.

Building Your Business With Purpose

Stacey Abrams tells us: “When you see something wrong, you have to speak up. You have to say something.” Many successful women entrepreneurs built businesses because they identified problems needing solutions. What problem are you uniquely positioned to solve? Proverbs 31:18 says of the industrious woman: “She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.”  This speaks to both purpose and sustainability—build something that serves others while sustaining you.

Guard Your Joy Fiercely

Don’t let anyone stop you from your joy. Entrepreneurship should ultimately bring fulfillment, even through its challenges. Shonda Rhimes powerfully states: “Dreams are lovely. But they are just dreams. Fleeting, ephemeral, pretty. But dreams do not come true just because you dream them. It’s hard work that makes things happen.”  That hard work should be infused with joy.

Protect your entrepreneurial joy by:

• Celebrating small wins
• Building a supportive community
• Setting healthy boundaries
• Remembering your “why”
• Taking time for rest and renewal

Philippians 4:4 reminds us: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Your business journey should contain moments of genuine celebration and joy.

Taking That First Step

Michelle Obama wisely shared: “You can’t make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen.” What’s your first step?

Perhaps it’s:

• Registering your business name
• Creating a simple website
• Making your first prototype
• Having coffee with a potential client
• Writing your business plan

Ruth 2:10-12 shares the story of Ruth, who took bold action despite uncertainty, and was told: “May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

Conclusion: Your Biggest Cheerleader

As we conclude today, remember the words of Kamala Harris: “You never have to ask anyone permission to lead. When you want to lead, you lead.”
